The arrival of a new baby is a cause for rejoicing. A new child, one of the most profound events in a family’s life, represents a world of possibilities and promise. We at Beit Midrash Eitz Chaim will be happy to meet with you either before or after the birth of your child, to discuss ways to create a meaningful ceremony that welcomes your child and honors your family, linking you to the chain of our Jewish tradition.
According to Jewish tradition, the name of a person describes their essence. It provides identity and generational connection. It begins the process of shaping a human being. Choosing a name empowers parents with creativity. The rabbis tell us that a name can influence the behavior of the person and provide a spiritual connection between the individual and their soul. A name carries enormous potential. It can define the individual or describe their personality. It can be a portent for the future or a wish that the person lives up to the potential expressed in the meaning of the name. It is important, therefore, to give much thought to a child’s shem kodesh, sacred or Hebrew name.
If the child is a boy a brit milah, the covenant of circumcision, is performed, usually on the eighth day after birth. The circumcision, which symbolizes the Jewish covenant with God, is usually performed at home by a mohel, who is religiously trained. The naming of the boy baby is traditionally announced at the brit milah.
A brita ceremony for girls may be held on the eighth day after birth, although there is no prescribed time for holding this ceremony. There is a growing liturgy of rituals surrounding the naming of a baby girl that are innovative and meaningful. Rabbi Rosen is happy to meet with you and create a ceremony that is religious, spiritual, and personally meaningful.
